Barbering, Cosmetology & Apprenticeship

Offering complete Barbering and Cosmetology education through Apprenticeship. This total immersion approach affords the student a wealth of knowledge through first hand experience.

  Swarthy’s Barbering & Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program is approved by the State of California Division of Apprenticeship Standards and by the State of California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology and is proud to offer small class sizes with passionate and dedicated Instructors. Apprentices receive on the job training, related and supplemental instruction or classroom training throughout the term of the program. Upon completion of the minimum requirements of the program a person is eligible to apply to take the state board exam to earn a full license through the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

 

PROCEDURES TO BECOME A BARBER/COSMETOLOGIST APPRENTICE: 

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Your must provide a social security card or tax identification number and a government issued picture ID with your current address when you submit your application.

  • Barber and Cosmetology sponsor/trainer must agree to train and pay you the state's minimum wage. The sponsor must provide proof of Worker’s Compensation Insurance for the apprentice, without exception!

  • Every Establishment or Trainer  must have a valid license with the Board of Barber & Cosmetology (BBC) 

  • The  establishment and the licensed trainer must NOT have any pending fines issued against them by the BBC. Otherwise the application will be rejected.

  • Applications must be filled out completely and signed by all parties. If application is improperly filled out, the applicant will be notified to redo and correct the mistake which could cost you valuable time.

  • Submit your application to Swarthy’s Barbering & Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program at 1014 Fair Oaks Ave, South Pasadena, CA 91030 on Mondays 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Either hand-in or mail-in (if necessary) signed applications.

  • Pre-Apprenticeship training must be completed before the apprentice commences classroom training and working at the Shop or Salon. Once the apprentice receives his/her apprentice license from the BBC. they can commence working for their Sponsor/Trainer.  

 

COST OF PROGRAM:

PROGRAM BASICS AND EXPECTATIONS:

  • The program will take approximately 18 month to complete. The barber/cosmetology apprentices must complete 3,200 hours at the Shop/Salon and they must complete a minimum of 220 hours of classroom training,

  • The apprentice is required to attend all classes and work  a minimum of 32 hours a week (but will not receive credit for no more than 42 hours/week) at the shop/salon.

  • Once the classroom and work hours/competencies have been completed, the apprentice is eligible to take the state board exam for licensure.

  • Failure to attend classes and/or work is subject to review by disciplinary committee and may result in a possible termination from the apprentice program.

  • Failure to communicate or turn in related documents (check stubs, work hour sheet, proof of workers comp, etc.) is also subject to the disciplinary committee and possible termination from the apprentice program.
